Final Project and Dissertation: "Improving Web Search with Reinforced Heuristics"
Google's founders established an extremely intelligent method for ranking pages based on the link structure of the web. However, their subsequent work with user clicking behavior has never been published. In this project, the Monte Carlo method of Reinforcement Learning was used to treat each series of clicks as an episode indicating user preference. Clicked links were rewarded, and non-clicked links were punished, according to their positions in the page. This yielded search results that became more optimally ordered over time, evidenced by a steady decrease in punishments and increase in rewards.
