Final Project and Dissertation: "Improving Web Search with Reinforced Heuristics"
The founders of Google established an innovative method for ranking pages based on the link structure of the web, but more recent work on ranking has been based on the clicking behavior of search engine users. Unfortunately, this work has not been published by any major search engine due to the importance of industry secrets. In this project, an artificial intelligence technique known as reinforcement learning was used to treat a series of clicks as an episode indicating user preference. A probabilistic model was used to "reward" heuristics for clicked links and "punish" heuristics for non-clicked links, thereby yielding more accurate search results. Future work would include the study of user profiles to better judge the reliability and subjectivity of the information that is gained from each click.
